Norilsk Nickel to maintain CO2 emissions despite production growth
ZAVIDOVO, Tver Region, Aug 27 (PRIME) -- CO2 emissions of Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel will not exceed the current level of 10 million tonnes a year in the next 10 years in spite of the company’s plans to raise production by about 30%, Stanislav Seleznev, director of Norilsk Nickel’s environmental department, told PRIME late on Thursday.
“Our figure is us emitting slightly less than 10 million (tonnes) per year, it is a good figure. We made an evaluation, we rated it, and we looked into how much other companies of our sector are emitting. This is a good level. We have production plans, and we plan to raise production significantly (by 30%) in the next 10 years. At the same time, we have set a goal of not exceeding the (emission) level that we have now for the entire period,” he said.
Norilsk Nickel wants to become environmentally neutral until 2050, but it is yet to understand a way to do that. The company will prepare a plan for possibilities of reaching environmental neutrality in 2022, he said.
